The Adoration of the Magi by Sprague & Co., London, of an Arras Tapestry for Exeter College, Oxford, UK
Edward Burne-Jones, architect(s). From the American Architect and Building News, June 14, 1890. 12 by 16.25 inches (with border). VG+.
"This tapestry was first produced in 1890 for the Exeter College in Oxford [making this most likely the very first print illustration of it]. It became Morris & Co's most popular ecclesiastical tapestry. It was originally designed by renowned artist Edward Burne-Jones with the background details by John Henry Dearle." These plates are rarely seen in AABN volumes. This picture is extremely hard to find. The American Architect and Building News had a very small circulation during this time and these original prints only appeared in a very limited number of issues that were distributed to a few prominent architects. Has a mat border and foam core backing (not attached to the picture). The whole picture measures approx. 12 by 16.25 inches (with border). Extraordinary detail in this early photographic print.
